MORE ABOUT ME

I'm here to help retail boutique owners like you feel more confident in the money-side of your business. Retail bookkeeping is more complex than most small businesses, but these blog posts & podcast episodes are designed to give you bite-sized bits of information you can learn & implement right away.

There are really only a handful of reasons boutique owners tell me they haven't gotten their bookkeeping together. If you've ever said any of these, I'm hoping this blog will help shift your mindset.

“I don't know where to start.” “I tried QuickBooks and it didn't work.” “It's going to be more work than what I'm already doing.”

If you've said any one of those three things to yourself, this post is for you. Because none of them have to be the reason you stay stuck. All it takes is a little shift in your mindset, and a real, practical next step.

This post may contain affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission if you make a purchase through them — at no extra cost to you. I only share products and tools I truly love and recommend!

Excuse #1: “I Don't Even Know Where to Start”

This is probably the most common excuse I hear. And here's your actual starting point, right now, today. Sign up for QuickBooks. Import my free Chart of Accounts template (it's already boutique-specific, so you're not stuck guessing what categories you even need). Connect your BUSINESS bank and credit card accounts, and start adding your transactions.

That's it. That's the starting point. You don't need to know how to read a Profit & Loss report or reconcile an account (matching your bookkeeping records against your actual bank statements to make sure everything lines up) yet. You just need those four things done.

If you want the full step-by-step roadmap after that, walking you through exactly what to do with those transactions once they're in there, that's what my membership is for. But even without it, you now have a real place to begin today, instead of waiting for some day when you magically feel ready.

One of my members, Kim, was tracking everything in a spreadsheet with no real system behind it. Just numbers scattered around with no structure to make sense of them. Once she had an actual starting point to follow, she called it a game changer. Not because the bookkeeping itself got easier overnight, but because she finally knew what to do first.

Excuse #2: “I Tried QuickBooks Before, But It Just Didn't Work For Me”

I want to say this next part with a LOT of love, because I know it might sting a little. If you've tried QuickBooks before and it didn't work for you, it's very likely not because QuickBooks is broken, or because you're bad at this. It's because you weren't using it right. And that's not a knock on you. Nobody ever actually showed you the RIGHT way to use it for a business like yours.

QuickBooks is a tool, and a tool is only as good as the setup and instruction behind it. A boutique running sales through Shopify needs a completely different setup than a service provider sending invoices, or a shop using Square at a farmers market. If you signed up, poked around, got confused, and walked away, that's not a “you” problem. That's a “nobody showed you the boutique-specific version of this” problem.

“It didn't work for me” almost always really means “I didn't have someone walk me through it correctly.” That's not a reflection of your ability to learn this. It just means you were missing the right guide, and the right setup, from the start.

One of my members, Meigen, had tried QuickBooks years before and stepped away from it, feeling like it never quite clicked. When she came back to it, she wasn't starting from a place of confidence. She was working through old cleanup and still in the middle of reconciling her accounts. She's not “done” yet, but she's moving forward, this time with an actual boutique-specific setup behind her.

If you've got prior years that are a total mess and don't know where to begin cleaning them up, that's exactly what my QuickBooks Cleanup Bootcamp inside the membership walks you through. It's built specifically to help you deal with old messes, so you can get everything sorted and start fresh in the current year instead of feeling like you have to fix years of history before you're even allowed to move forward.

Excuse #3: “This Is Going to Be MORE Work Than What I'm Doing Now”

This is the fear that keeps people stuck the longest. The assumption that having a system means MORE effort, not less. But it's almost always the opposite. The chaos of no system, the guessing, the scrambling, the pile of receipts you're avoiding, THAT'S the hard way. A real system is almost always less work than what you're doing right now.

Picture the boutique owner who's currently keeping receipts in a shoebox (or worse, a Ziploc bag in her car) and trying to remember three months later what a $47 charge from Target was actually for. That's not less work. That's MORE work, it's just spread out and hidden so it doesn't feel like work in the moment. Compare that to sitting down for 20 minutes on a Monday, categorizing what came through, and being done. One of those is a slow leak. The other is a routine.

A good system isn't asking you to do MORE. It's asking you to do the SAME amount of effort, just on purpose, instead of by accident and under pressure. You're not adding work to your plate, you're organizing the work that was already sitting there, unattended, waiting for tax season to force your hand.

One of my members, Cambri, told me she was nervous the membership was going to mean a lot more to keep up with. Instead, once she got boutique-specific QuickBooks training (not generic small business advice, but training that actually understood how Shopify, inventory, and her specific sales platforms worked together), things started to feel easier. She's actually recommending the membership to other business owners in her own local networking group now.

Ready to Shift Your Mindset for Good?

None of these three excuses are actually reasons to wait. Not knowing where to start, having tried QuickBooks before and had it not click, or worrying it'll be more work than what you're already doing, all of it is normal. None of it means you're behind. It just means you're human.

If any of these three have been the thing keeping YOU stuck, I've got exactly what you need. I'm running a live, 4-day Boutique Bookkeeping Bootcamp September 14th through the 17th. Four live coaching calls, a real framework for getting your Shopify or Square sales into QuickBooks Online, checking that your payment processor actually paid you every dollar you're owed, and a 15-minute routine you'll actually keep up all year. It's just $15 as an early bird price, and limited time replays are available if you can't make it live.

No more girl math. No more guessing. Head to findingfreedomfinancial.com/bootcamp and let's fix your books together.

With over 10 years of accounting experience, I've seen firsthand how retail boutique bookkeeping is more complex than other industries - you’ve got inventory, sales tax, and multiple payment processors. I've built my own bookkeeping systems I've used with my retail clients over the past 4 years, and I've broken it down and documented it all to help other small retailers implement it themselves.
