If you’ve ever thought “I really need to get my books under control, but I can’t afford to hire someone” – you’re not alone. That’s one of the most common things I hear from boutique owners, and honestly? It’s the exact reason I added “bookkeeping coach” to what I do.

Here’s the thing most boutique owners don’t realize: there’s a third option sitting right between “hire a bookkeeper” and “figure it out alone.” And for a lot of retailers, working with a bookkeeping coach is actually the BEST fit.

What Is a Bookkeeping Coach, Exactly?

Think of a bookkeeping coach the same way you’d think of a personal trainer – except instead of teaching you how to work out, they’re teaching you how to manage your money. A bookkeeping coach doesn’t take over your books. They teach you how to do them yourself, correctly, and with confidence.

Bookkeeping is a learned skill. Nobody hands you a manual when you open a boutique and says “here’s exactly how to track your finances.” Most business owners are just winging it and hoping for the best. A bookkeeping coach bridges that gap.

Why Boutique Owners Have It Harder Than Everyone Else

Not all small business bookkeeping is created equal. If you have a friend who runs a service-based business, her books are probably pretty simple – money comes in, expenses go out. But YOUR books? They have layers.

As a boutique owner, you’re dealing with inventory, cost of goods sold, sales tax (which can get complicated FAST), and multiple payment processors like Shopify, Square, or PayPal. All of that has to be accounted for correctly, and QuickBooks Online can absolutely handle it – but only if it’s set up right for retail from the start. That’s exactly the kind of thing a bookkeeping coach helps you navigate.

How I Became a Bookkeeping Coach

When I started my business as a virtual bookkeeper, I quickly noticed a gap. There were SO many boutique owners who genuinely couldn’t afford to hand their books off to someone else – but they were completely lost trying to do it themselves. They weren’t bad at business. They just hadn’t been taught.

That’s when I realized: if I couldn’t take on every boutique owner as a full-service client, I could still help them by TEACHING them. So I added bookkeeping coach to my role, started building out training, and haven’t looked back since.

What Changes When You Have the Right Support

Here’s what I see happen again and again when boutique owners finally get the right support in their corner:

First, they stop avoiding their books. Avoidance almost always comes from confusion – when you actually know what you’re doing, it stops feeling scary.

Second, tax season stops being a scramble. When your books are accurate all year because you’ve been doing them correctly, handing things off to your tax preparer is actually… fine. No panic, no mystery. Just clean numbers.

And third (this is the big one), they start making real business decisions from real data. Not gut feelings. Not guesses. Actual numbers they understand and trust. THAT’S where the magic happens.

Is a Bookkeeping Coach Right for You?

Working with a bookkeeping coach is a great fit if you’re a DIY-er who wants to do it right, a boutique owner who can’t afford full-service bookkeeping right now, or someone who’s been winging it and KNOWS it.

It’s not the right fit if you truly have zero interest in ever touching your own books – and that’s okay! That’s what full-service bookkeeping is for. [I offer that too – you can find info at my website.] But if you’re willing to learn, a bookkeeping coach can completely change how you feel about the financial side of your business.

With over 10 years of accounting experience, I've seen firsthand how retail boutique bookkeeping is more complex than other industries - you’ve got inventory, sales tax, and multiple payment processors. I've built my own bookkeeping systems I've used with my retail clients over the past 4 years, and I've broken it down and documented it all to help other small retailers implement it themselves.
