There is an ugly truth to chasing social media virality. This constant race doesn’t feel very good.

You know what does? Creating a connected and engaged community within your audience!

Think of it like a storefront, what do you do when customers come in? TALK TO THEM.

For example, make small talk, ask questions, and try to build a relationship with them.

The concept still applies online.

Humans crave connection!

Use the features you have online to connect with your audience.

The deliverable of the conversation may be different than in a storefront but the concept is the same: connection.

Without a doubt, engagement is the one thing most businesses aren’t doing online. Sure, they post content but then that’s usually where it stops!

Posting is GREAT don’t get me wrong but when you pair that WITH engagement…💥💥💥 magic happens.

To demonstrate, here are some ways to engage with your audience using your content

  • stories – polls, quizzes, replies, emojis
  • static posts – commenting, liking, saving, sharing
  • reels – polls, commenting, liking, saving, sharing
  • messages – dm current/new followers

For engaging I have this to do list

  1. Engage for 15 minutes on the feed
  2. Ensure all comments are responded to on posts
  3. Engage for 15 minutes in the stories

I do this DAILY.

If you don’t have time to engage, hire it out! I’d love to do it for you. And yes…I can mimic your brand voice so they think it’s you!

Comment “engage” to learn more about that service!

All of this to say, I want you to remember that going viral shouldn’t be the goal.

The goal should be building an account with a loyal audience full of warm leads.

What’s the point of all of those views if none of them are going to buy from you?

So, instead of focusing on going viral I encourage you to focus on

  • valuable content
  • engaging with your audience
  • being consistent

These things have undeniably helped me AND my clients be successful on social media.

What are your thoughts on this? Do you find yourself chasing those “viral” metrics?

With over 10 years of accounting experience, I've seen firsthand how retail boutique bookkeeping is more complex than other industries - you’ve got inventory, sales tax, and multiple payment processors. I've built my own bookkeeping systems I've used with my retail clients over the past 4 years, and I've broken it down and documented it all to help other small retailers implement it themselves.
